Rothenburg ob der Tauber – city of towers
As early as the 16th century, Rothenburg was often called "Franconian Jerusalem" because of its city silhouette - rightly so, because the city view is characterized by numerous towers. The old town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber is surrounded by a city wall. Six gates and a few pedestrian doors lead through these city walls into (or out of) the old town. Visitors can explore the city wall on the Rothenburger Turmweg, which leads four kilometers around the old town in around 2.5 hours.
The historical vault – museum above Rothenburg's dungeon
Deep under the Gothic town hall wing are the former dungeons of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, where the legendary mayor Heinrich Toppler (around 1340 to 1408) ended up. The subterranean cells can still be visited via the historical vault of the Historical Festival Association “Der Meistertrunk”. With a selected collection of original weapons, flags and uniforms, the history vault takes you back to the time of the Thirty Years' War. Sometimes scenes of everyday life from that time are recreated.
